Elliot Minor (formerly The Academy) is a rock band from York, England. They cite among their influences Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, The All-American Rejects, Queen and The Beach Boys. According to the band’s Myspace page, they also blend classical music into their sound. Elliot Minor, when they were still known as ‘The Academy’, supported McFly in Newcastle in 2006 to an audience of over 13,000 people and were spotted by a representative of Repossession Records to whom they later signed a record deal.
The band consists of members Alex Davies (Guitar and Vocals), Ed Minton (Guitar and Vocals), Dan Hetherton (Drums and Backing Vocals), Ali Paul (Piano and Keyboard) and Teddy Hetherton (Bass).
Alex and Dan both grew up in York, where they went to the Minster choir school, while Ed, (born in Japan) started his education in England at the age of eight. Alex went on to Uppingham School where he met Ed, and together they devoted their time to making their own music. Dan attended Pocklington school where music was his main focus along with drama. In October 2005, having left school, Alex and Dan found themselves back at the Minster, both picking up younger brothers. Shortly after their chance reunion, Elliot Minor (previously known as The Academy) formed, and they began writing and recording. Elliot Minor currently have 26+ songs recorded and are still writing and recording. All material to date are original songs written and recorded by Elliot Minor. They have been recording for around 3 months and are now taking a break to continue playing shows around the UK. The album is planned to be released in late July, while they will be releasing a yet undecided new single in early July. Since the band set up as a band in 2005 they have grown a following and started to do more and more gigs. As gigs became more frequent, they decided to include Ali Paul and Ed Hetherton (Dan’s brother) in the band. They went to the Minster school with Alex and Dan when they were younger. They now play keyboard and bass in live performances.
Elliot Minor released their first single, ‘Parallel Worlds’, on the 9 April 2007. It entered at number 31 on the UK Singles Charts. Prior to this it had already been playlisted on major channels such as Kerrang! TV, MTV2, The Box and The Hits. Every Monday, the band post a Webisode of themselves recording their new album in Los Angeles, California on their MySpace page and on Youtube. The producer is Jim Wirt, who works with the bands Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, two of Elliot Minor’s main influences.
Elliot Minor have played numerous small gigs in their local area, including The Mount School, York where there was no entry fee. Since March 2007, they have been touring around the country including Scotland. Locations include Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, London, Glasgow and Birmingham. The majority of the venues booked are smaller halls within various Carling Academies.
